The 7 Partnership Domains of any Key Account Relationship
Last updated: September 23, 2026
At Match Vertical Partners, we created a system called the Vitality Index, the system that gives teams a tailored growth strategy for every key account in their portfolio, in minutes. The system was built on the 7 Partnership Domains of key account relationships. If you are operating in a few of them, that's not enough to create predictable forecast. You need to be focusing on all 7 and have a growth strategy for each one to have a real shot at hitting your number consistently.
The 7 Partnership Domains at a Glance
- Foundation: Operational stability and contract compliance
- Relationships: Depth of executive and champion engagement
- Competitiveness: Differentiation and value proposition strength
- Expansion: Market landscape and diversification
- Collaboration: Internal team alignment and vendor partnerships
- Predictability: Forecasting accuracy and process discipline
- Reputation: Customer advocacy and brand identity
What are the 7 Partnership Domains?
Think of them this way. If your key account partnership is like a big house, then the domains would be each of its rooms.

Walk into any room in the house and you'll see different objects like a bed, chair, closet, sink… These objects tell us about the room, what makes it unique and what we do while we're there. We call these objects Growth Drivers and there are 21 of them, three in each domain.
For instance, in the Relationship domain there are three growth drivers: Executive Access, Internal Executive Buy-In and Status with Champions. Each of these plays a major role in how the Relationship Domain functions. If the growth drivers are maintained and in good standing, the domain functions as intended and the partnership grows. If the growth drivers are neglected, then the domain starts to slide and the impact ripples to other parts of the partnership. If you lose your Status with a Champion, that could impact your executive access, create a decline in opportunities, see revenue drop and watch apathy form from your internal executive.
Each growth driver in the domains has its own strategy for growth and a playbook to execute. In all, the 21 growth drivers have over 1,200 unique plays teams will work through to grow, protect and advance their partnership status across each of the 7 domains.

Versus
Key Account Partnership Growing

Definition: A Vital Partnership is created when a key account relationship reaches Level 4 status in the Vitality Index signifying your company has become a vital partner to your client's success.
Benefits
- Minimize customer churn in key accounts
- Increase wallet share by becoming and sustaining top supplier status in each of your key account relationships
- Increase Long-Term Value of each key account relationship by 10, 20, 25X in some cases (see case studies)
- Increase sales and account team capacity to expand your key account portfolio
- Increase account management and leadership capabilities of all team members touching the account
- Save money on advanced sales training, use the system for live-action coaching on how to win, expand and protect active key accounts
- Save significant time on developing account growth strategies, account planning and forecasting
- Know exactly where each account stands and replace gut-feel ratings with a consistent, evidence-based standard
- Increase forecast accuracy and help establish realistic company goals and timelines for growth
In this system, the teams don't have to focus on which room they're in or what growth driver to tackle. The Vitality Index shows them exactly what to do next and when to do it based on the live scoring.
No guesswork and no excuses. Forecasts are mostly missed because teams don't know what's going to happen and make a bad prediction. This system helps you predict what's going to happen next because you are living in the domains every day.
Advantages
- The account's knowledge stays with the company. When a senior key account team member leaves, the score history, the open objectives, and the next moves remain in the system, so a handover starts from a documented account state.
- Risk surfaces while there is still time to act. Score history shows whether an account is growing or drifting, and that signal tends to appear well before the renewal conversation.
- Every account is held to the same standard. The scoring framework applies across the portfolio, so the quality of account work depends less on who happens to own it.
- Expansion openings become visible account by account. Expansion inside existing accounts produced 52% of new revenue, and sustained executive engagement generates 189% more expansion opportunities, according to the Ebsta x Pavilion 2025 GTM Benchmarks. The assessment shows where those openings sit in each account.

Ask your reps one question: what are you doing today, and why?
There is one question that audits a sales organization faster than any dashboard: what are you doing today, and why? Ask it on any sales floor and you will hear the same answers. Hit my activity goals. Hit my target. Grow the business. Every answer is motion or a scoreboard. Almost none is an aim. Here is how to read the answers, and what they reveal about whether your team is running a system or just trying to keep moving.

Why your sales training fails to produce ROI
The best sales methodologies are genuinely great. And under pressure, in front of a live customer, most reps forget all of it and go with their nature. Aviation, the military, medicine, and elite sports all solved this exact problem, and none of them solved it with more courses. They embedded the training in a system that delivers it under pressure. Here is the evidence, and what it means for your next training investment.

Your customer account plans are missing some vital pieces
Account plans go stale because they are snapshots, written in a planning event while the account keeps moving. Reps stop using them because nothing in the daily work ever touches the plan again.
